Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC
In November 2021, Microsoft released a new LTSC version of Windows 10 IoT Enterprise based on
Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H2 (Build 19044). The new version is called Windows 10 IoT Enterprise
2021 LTSC and is again a long-term support variant with security updates for up to 10 years (after its
release).
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC basically offers the same features as Windows 10 Enterprise version
21H2 (Build 19044), but without Microsoft Store, Cortana and bundled apps (e.g., Office). Intentionally, it also
doesn't receive any mandatory updates. The new version is the ideal Windows 10 edition for machine
builders with requests for long term support, smaller footprints, lockdown features, customization and
deployment options. For new applications, we strongly recommend using the new Windows 10 IoT
Enterprise 2021 LTSC version.
Features
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC is based on Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H2 (Build 19044) and
offers following new features:
Microsoft Edge browser support (Internet Explorer has already been discontinued)
Improved Unified Write Filter (UWF)
Optimized strip down features

customization and lockdown options with updated ADI driver, licensing tool, UWF manager, settings changer,

and language packs. Those images are also pre-installed and activated, where the activation data is also
permanently stored on the devices.
The new Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC is only available as 64-bit version with UEFI boot, the
minimum mass storage size is 40 GB and minimum RAM size is 2GB.
With Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC we now only offer a fixed set on four pre-installed default
languages (English EN, German DE, French FR and Spanish ES). Other languages are also not able preconfigurable in IQ, those must be installed via language pack (available on our website, login required).
Scope and availability
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC will be offered for the following product families and will be rolled out
in three steps:

Licensing model
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC is based on the same licensing model as Windows 10 IoT Enterprise
2019 LTSC. Therefore, Microsoft distinguishes three license types based on the following performance

The classification according to the performance class of the processors leads to in a significant price
advantage for the lower and mid-range performance segments. The prices of Windows 10 IoT Enterprise
2021 LTSC for the three license types basically remain the same as for the Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2019
LTSC versions.

Recovery solution
For Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC, there is a recovery solution that can be downloaded from the
B&R website (login required). The recovery solution can be used to restore a Windows 10 IoT Enterprise
2021 LTSC recovery solution image that has been damaged or accidentally deleted.
License activation is not affected, because pre-installed and activated systems have the activation data
permanently stored on the devices,
Field upgrades
Field upgrades to Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC are also possible. With that, customers can
upgrade supported products (mentioned under Scope and availability) in the field to the latest Windows 10
IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC version by using the recovery solution and recovery solution image from the B&R
website (login required).
This should not be the preferred method of installation and should only be used in exceptional cases where a
factory upgrade at the headquarter is not possible. A major disadvantage compared to factory installations is
the lack of Windows activation. During a factory installation, the Windows version is also activated, and the
activation data is permanently saved on the device. After a field upgrade, the activation must be carried out
manually in the field online via Internet or telephone. Another disadvantage is the fact, that in this case the
activation data is not permanently stored on the device. In the case of a new installation, the system must be
activated again.
Regarding Hypervisor, there are some differences when using a field installed image (recovery solution) vs. a
pre-installed and pre-activated Windows 10 IoT Enterprise image. The installation of Hypervisor could cause
loss of activation. For more information, please review the corresponding working guide (available on our
website, login required).
Field upgrades are only individually released for specific customers after consultation with Product
Management. If required, please contact hmi.office@br-automation.com.
